Uganda Deploys Troops to DRC to Combat Rising Militia Violence

Uganda has deployed troops to the DRC’s Bunia to combat local militias committing massacres. The Ugandan military will work alongside Congolese forces against groups like the Allied Democratic Forces. This deployment comes as M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, advance toward critical cities, raising concerns of significant human rights violations.

Uganda’s military announced a deployment of troops to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to combat local militia groups contributing to violence in the region. The Ugandan forces will be positioned in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, which has seen increased insecurity due to militia activities. This action underscores the Ugandan commitment to supporting DRC’s efforts to restore stability.

Amid rising violence, Uganda’s military spokesman, Felix Kulayigye, stated that joint operations will target militia groups accused of carrying out “massacres”. Uganda already has existing troop contingents in the DRC, collaborating with Congolese forces against extremist factions such as the Allied Democratic Forces, known for ties to the Islamic State.

Prior to the deployment, Uganda’s armed forces commander, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, issued an ultimatum demanding rebel groups in Bunia surrender their arms within 24 hours, warning that noncompliance would result in military action. This ultimatum reflects the increasing urgency of the situation in the DRC.

In the larger context, the M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda, has recently made significant territorial advances, threatening the stability of the eastern DRC by approaching strategic cities such as Butembo. M23 has already captured Goma and Bukavu, adding pressure to the Congolese military forces.

The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, has condemned the actions of M23, alleging violations including the killing of children and the targeting of humanitarian resources. His office has reported evidence of children’s involvement in armed conflict, highlighting a distressing aspect of the ongoing warfare in the DRC.

The situation in eastern Congo continues to evolve as Uganda sends troops to support efforts against local militias amidst a backdrop of severe human rights allegations against the M23 rebel group. The rapid advancements by M23 and the Uganda military’s response showcase the urgent need for coordination to restore peace and security in the region. The international community is closely monitoring the developments, particularly concerning the rights of vulnerable populations in conflict zones.
