Nigeria Dismisses Niger’s Claims of Collusion with France as False Accusations

Nigeria rejected allegations from Niger’s junta about a collaboration with France to destabilize Niger, labeling them as baseless claims. The Nigerian government emphasized its commitment to regional stability and security while challenging Niger to provide credible evidence for the accusations. The military reinforced that it will not permit any foreign military base and will combat terrorism effectively amid collaboration with ECOWAS.

On Thursday night, the Nigerian federal government firmly rejected allegations made by Niger’s junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, claiming a clandestine collaboration between Nigeria and France aimed at destabilizing Niger. The government labeled these accusations as baseless and deceptive, stemming from a desire to blackmail Nigeria in light of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) stance against the illegal assumption of power in Niger. Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, branded the claims as nonexistent and emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to regional peace, stressing that it has not formed any alliances intended to undermine Nex as it works collaboratively with ECOWAS.

Tensions have escalated in West Africa following military coups, with leadership challenges leading to strained relations among neighboring countries. The recent allegations by Niger’s junta leader reflect ongoing regional instability and distrust, particularly concerning historical relationships with former colonial powers. Nigeria, as a leading member of ECOWAS, plays a critical role in mediating conflicts and promoting democratic governance. The accusation from Niger appears to be a response to external pressures and internal vulnerabilities faced by its current regime.

In light of the rejection of allegations by Nigeria against claims of collusion with France, the federal government has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining regional stability and upholding diplomatic relations with Niger. The continuous focus on countering terrorism and fostering economic collaboration underscores Nigeria’s strategic commitment to its northern neighbor. Furthermore, the Nigerian military stands resolute against any foreign military presence within its territory, reinforcing its sovereignty on national security matters.
