Glamorgan County Cricket Club has officially signed Sri Lankan pace bowler Asitha Fernando for the commencement of the 2025 season. The 27-year-old bowler is set to join the team for the initial seven matches of the County Championship Division Two, contingent upon receiving a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka Cricket. Fernando, a key player across all formats of cricket, aims to bolster Glamorgan’s bowling attack as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Fernando stated, “I would like to thank Glamorgan Cricket so much for this opportunity. I am extremely thrilled to be a part of Glamorgan and to return to the county cricket scene this year.” He emphasized that his previous experience in county cricket significantly contributed to his development as a player.
Asitha Fernando made his international debut in July 2017 during a one day international against Zimbabwe, followed by his Test debut against South Africa in January 2021. He achieved his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket against Bangladesh in May 2022 and was celebrated for his remarkable performance of 6-51 in the second innings. In August 2024, he further solidified his reputation by securing his second five-wicket haul at Lord’s, thus becoming only the second Sri Lankan to be honored on the Lord’s honours board.
Mark Wallace, the director of cricket at Glamorgan, expressed enthusiasm about Fernando’s signing: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome a bowler of Asitha’s quality to Sophia Gardens for the start of the 2025 season.” Wallace emphasized Fernando’s valuable experience in UK conditions, having played county cricket before, and noted his impressive performances during the recent series against England.
Asitha Fernando is an accomplished fast bowler from Sri Lanka, recognized for his versatility and effectiveness in all formats of the game. This signing by Glamorgan highlights their strategy to enhance their bowling lineup as they compete in the County Championship. Fernando’s prior experience in county cricket, coupled with his international performances, particularly against formidable opponents like England, positions him as a valuable asset for the team in the upcoming season. His record of five-wicket hauls showcases his potential to make a significant impact during crucial matches.
The signing of Asitha Fernando by Glamorgan marks a significant addition to their squad for the 2025 season. With impressive credentials and crucial experience in both international and county cricket, Fernando is well-prepared to elevate Glamorgan’s performance in the County Championship. His anticipation to contribute positively to the team’s efforts underscores the importance of this acquisition, setting a hopeful tone for the season ahead.
