Moroccan FM Nasser Bourita Leads Consultative Meeting for Libyan Political Dialogue

Moroccan FM Nasser Bourita chaired a consultative meeting with Libyan HoR and HCS members in Bouznika. He stressed the importance of a Libyan-led dialogue and reiterated Morocco’s unwavering support for Libya’s stability amidst ongoing political challenges following postponed elections in December 2021.

On Wednesday, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita convened a consultative meeting in Bouznika with members of Libya’s House of Representatives (HoR) and the High Council of State (HCS). He emphasized the necessity of a Libyan-led dialogue to resolve ongoing issues in Libya, recalling the spirit of agreements established in Skhirat. Bourita asserted that Morocco’s steadfast position remains unchanged amidst the evolving circumstances surrounding Libya’s political landscape, highlighting that the Kingdom endorses Libya’s stability as integral to overall regional cohesion.

Bourita expressed that while numerous international conferences have been held to address Libyan issues, genuine dialogue between Libyan factions is irreplaceable. He reaffirmed Morocco’s supportive role in fostering meaningful discussions among Libyan leaders to find a political resolution. The Minister noted that Bouznika’s hosting of this meeting reflects trust and a comfort level among the Libyan participants in engaging with Morocco.

Previously, members of HoR and HCS had held discussions in Cairo and Tunis in their ongoing efforts to navigate the political stalemate resulting from the postponement of elections originally scheduled for December 24, 2021. Bourita’s comments reinforce Morocco’s sustained commitment to facilitating Libyan reconciliation and dialogue, crucial for the country’s future peace and stability.
