Senegalese Media Regards Ethiopia-Somalia Pact as Historic Diplomacy by Türkiye
Senegalese media praise the Turkey-mediated agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia, which addresses past tensions. The Ankara Declaration emphasizes cooperation, respect for sovereignty, and future conflict resolution. Turkey’s role highlights its commitment to stability in East Africa as leaders pledge to overcome differences for shared prosperity.
Senegalese media outlets have celebrated the recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia as a significant diplomatic achievement, facilitated by Turkey’s mediation. Senego, a prominent news platform in Senegal, highlighted the importance of this pact, titled the Ankara Declaration, which was announced following a meeting in Turkey between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This agreement aims to reinforce cooperation and peaceful relations while resolving longstanding tensions stemming from Ethiopia’s prior agreement to utilize the Red Sea access through Somaliland. The leaders have pledged to respect each other’s sovereignty, fostering a cooperative approach moving forward.
The diplomatic tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia have persisted since Eritrea’s independence in 1991, which resulted in Ethiopia losing direct access to the Red Sea. Recent disputes escalated with Ethiopia’s agreement to use the port of Berbera in Somaliland, igniting fears in Somalia regarding territorial integrity and port access. Turkey’s active mediation reflects its growing role in East African diplomacy, seeking to stabilize regional relations through cooperative agreements and conflict resolution framework.
The mediation by Turkey has yielded a constructive resolution to the longstanding tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia. It not only enhances cooperation between the two nations but also signifies Turkey’s commitment to ensuring peace and stability in East Africa. The Ankara Declaration thereby represents a positive step towards collaborative prosperity and mutual respect, affirming the principles enshrined in international law.
