Nigerian Government Initiates Dismissals for Workers with Fraudulent Degrees

The Nigerian government is sacking workers with degrees from unaccredited institutions in Benin Republic and Togo. The dismissals target those who graduated since 2017 and are part of a broader effort to address certificate fraud within the civil service. This initiative follows recent investigations revealing widespread misuse of academic qualifications.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially begun the dismissal of employees holding degrees from unaccredited private institutions located in the Benin Republic and Togo. The terminations apply to workers who obtained their degrees from 2017 onwards, as confirmed by Segun Imohiosen, spokesperson for the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. This initiative aims to enhance the integrity of the civil service by eliminating incompetent personnel.

Following revelations of widespread certificate fraud, including an investigation where a journalist corroborated obtaining a degree in just two months from a Beninese university, the Nigerian government has taken strict action against unverified academic qualifications. In August, the Federal Government declared that only eight universities were accredited to confer degrees to Nigerians in these neighboring countries. The Ministry of Education had previously identified over 22,500 Nigerians with fraudulent degrees from these institutions, leading to a comprehensive directive to revoke such certifications.

The actions taken by the Nigerian government reflect an urgent response to issues surrounding academic certification in the civil service. By targeting individuals who possess degrees from questionable institutions, the government aims to restore credibility within its workforce. As revealed by the National Youth Service Corps, dismissals have already commenced, and further evaluations are expected to continue until all fraudulent degrees are addressed.
