Syrian Regime Strengthens Ties with Iraq, Iran, and UAE Amidst Ongoing Threats
The Syrian regime, facing territorial losses in northern Syria, is actively seeking support from Iraq, Iran, and the UAE. The regime’s leader, Bashar al-Assad, is engaging in discussions to reinforce cooperation against terrorism and boost Syria’s sovereignty as the threat from opposition forces escalates following the recent fall of Aleppo.
The Syrian regime, under the leadership of President Bashar al-Assad, is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to garner support amid significant territorial losses to opposition forces in northern Syria, including the recent fall of Aleppo. With western Syria largely under its control, the regime now faces threats from the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in the east and Turkey in the north, as well as opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s assaults in Idlib.
In this context, Assad has reached out to key regional players such as Iran, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Russia over the past few days. Notably, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian is visiting Syria shortly after a series of conversations between Assad and regional leaders, including Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, who expressed Iraq’s readiness to assist Syria in combating terrorist threats. During their discussions, they emphasized the importance of cooperation in maintaining Syria’s sovereignty.
Furthermore, in a recent phone call, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the UAE reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to supporting Syria in its struggle against terrorism, expressing solidarity with Assad’s administration and acknowledging the need for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict. Since the beginning of the civil war in 2011, the Syrian regime has been working to reintegrate with Arab states, seeking to regain a foothold in the Arab League and accruing support from nations that perceive the Assad regime as a stabilizing force against chaos.
Despite these diplomatic gestures, the recent loss of Aleppo highlights the regime’s precarious position, indicating that Assad must foster unity with allies such as Iraq and Gulf states, along with continuing reliance on support from Iran and Russia to preserve stability in Syria.
The Syrian civil war has precipitated a complex geopolitical landscape involving multiple actors. Following a decade of conflict, the Assad regime has navigated a challenging environment marked by territorial losses and increasing pressures from both domestic and foreign insurgencies. The regime’s outreach to traditional allies and regional powers reflects a strategic approach aimed at consolidating support while confronting the realities of a fragmented Syria, characterized by diverse control across different regions. The recent developments underscore the Assad administration’s recognition of its vulnerabilities and the necessity for sustained alliances in the region.
In conclusion, the Syrian regime’s recent diplomatic efforts aim to secure critical support from Iraq, Iran, and the UAE as it grapples with significant losses in northern Syria. The ongoing offensive from opposition groups has prompted Assad to seek regional solidarity, which is vital for maintaining national stability and sovereignty. As the regime navigates this turbulent period, its alliances will be instrumental in shaping the future trajectory of Syria amidst ongoing conflicts and geopolitical maneuvering.
