Civil Society Calls for Implementation of Resolutions Ahead of Governors’ Forum
The Center for Peace and Advocacy has urged for the execution of resolutions from previous Governors’ Forums, citing the lack of accountability among South Sudan’s governors. As the 8th Annual Governors’ Forum approaches, concerns about governance, security, and economic challenges persist, requiring immediate attention and collaborative efforts between government and civil society.
On November 23, 2024, the Center for Peace and Advocacy (CPA), a civil society organization based in South Sudan, urged for the implementation of resolutions established during last year’s Governors’ Forum. This appeal coincides with the upcoming 8th Annual Governors’ Forum scheduled for November 25-29 in Juba, where relevant policy issues such as governance, security, and economic concerns will be addressed. CPA’s Executive Director, Ter Manyang Gatwech, underscored the importance of accountability amidst concerns regarding the lack of action on prior resolutions from the 6th and 7th forums. He lamented that the governors have yet to actualize peace initiatives aimed at fostering national cohesion, expressing the need for political leaders to prioritize their commitments to overcome the socio-economic challenges facing South Sudan. Furthermore, he called for enhanced cooperation between the government and civil society, advocating for a focus on critical issues including security arrangements and the repatriation of refugees. This year’s forum theme is “Forging Sustainable Peace: Committed Action in the Extended R-ARCSS Transition.”
The Governors’ Forum in South Sudan serves as a premier platform for policy dialogue among political actors, addressing essential governance challenges and fostering peace. The forum is held annually, with its resolutions aiming to steer national priorities towards stability and development. The need for effective implementation of past resolutions has become increasingly critical as the country grapples with persistent poverty and instability, particularly as many citizens remain displaced or without adequate livelihood opportunities. CPA’s campaign for accountability reflects a broader call within civil society for political leaders to fulfill their promises and work towards practical solutions for the South Sudanese populace.
The call by the Center for Peace and Advocacy for the implementation of past governors’ resolutions highlights a significant gap in governance and accountability in South Sudan. As the 8th Annual Governors’ Forum approaches, there is a pressing need for political leaders to honor their commitments to the South Sudanese people. Engaging civil society effectively could facilitate the realization of policies that contribute to lasting peace and economic stability within the nation.
