LINX Expands Internet Connectivity with New IXPs in Ghana and Kenya
LINX plans to launch two new IXPs in Africa in 2025: LINX Accra in Ghana, starting with Onix and PAIX data centers, and LINX Mombasa in Kenya, in collaboration with iColo. These moves will improve redundancy, interconnectivity, and support local ISPs, leveraging existing submarine cable systems in both countries.
The London Internet Exchange (LINX) recently announced plans to broaden its interconnection operations in Africa by establishing two new Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) next year: one in Ghana and another in Kenya. The LINX Accra IXP will commence in stages, initially operating from the data centers of Onix and PAIX, enhancing redundancy and interconnectivity for local networks. Meanwhile, in Kenya, the LINX Mombasa IXP, developed in partnership with local operator iColo, will be hosted at their MBA2 facility, mirroring the setup of the existing Nairobi IXP to facilitate high-speed connectivity. Both IXPs are expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2025, leveraging the significant international cable connectivity in these regions.
The initiative by LINX represents a strategic move to bolster internet connectivity across Africa, tapping into the continent’s underutilized potential for international bandwidth due to its geographic positioning on the west and east coasts. Ghana has become a pivotal hub with several key submarine cable systems, while Kenya’s Mombasa glistens as a new gateway in East Africa for Internet traffic. LINX’s expansion aims to strengthen local internet service providers and enhance overall digital infrastructure in these emerging markets.
In summary, LINX’s upcoming IXPs in Ghana and Kenya signify a pivotal enhancement to Africa’s internet landscape. These developments not only promise to bolster local ISP support through improved connectivity but also position both countries as vital nodes in the global internet infrastructure. The combination of redundancy, high-capacity technology, and geographical advantages indicates a promising future for African digital engagement and economic growth.
