Sudanese Military Denies Targeting UAE Diplomatic Post in Khartoum
The Sudanese military rejects claims by the UAE that its forces attacked the UAE ambassador’s residence in Khartoum, instead blaming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The UAE condemned the alleged bombing as a violation of diplomatic norms, asserting significant damage and planning to file complaints with international bodies. Meanwhile, accusations of UAE military support for the RSF have been a point of contention as the humanitarian crisis deepens in Sudan.
The Sudanese military has categorically denied allegations made by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) claiming that Sudanese forces bombed the UAE ambassador’s residence in Khartoum. In the wake of these accusations, the Sudanese military attributed responsibility for this act to the rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF), describing the alleged attack as ‘shameful and cowardly.’ The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the incident as a ‘heinous attack’ and a profound violation of diplomatic sanctity, stating that it resulted in significant damage to the diplomatic mission.
The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has primarily involved the military and the paramilitary RSF seeking control of the country. Amid this unrest, the UAE has been accused by Sudan’s military of supporting the RSF, allegations that the UAE has consistently denied. Despite the UAE’s focus on de-escalation and humanitarian aid, Sudanese leaders, including the ambassador to the UN, have asserted that UAE’s military support to the RSF is pivotal to the ongoing violence. This has escalated tensions between Sudan and the UAE, inviting interventions from various international bodies.
The confrontation between Sudan’s military and the RSF continues to fuel strife in the region, complicating diplomatic relations, particularly with the UAE. As accusations and counter-accusations unfold, the humanitarian crisis persists, with millions of Sudanese requiring aid and displacement, further exacerbating the precarious situation in Sudan.
