New truck transport system connects Türkiye, Kuwait and Jordan

Launch of the Türkiye-Kuwait and Germany-Jordan Truck Transport System marks a significant milestone in regional logistics and trade. This system was introduced on Friday as part of the “Global Transportation Corridors Forum” held in Istanbul. Abdulkadir Uraloglu, the Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, highlighted that the initiative will enable trucks from Türkiye to travel through Iraq and reach Kuwait, finally connecting to Jordan as part of the broader Development Road Initiative.

Development Road Initiative boosts regional trade efficiency

The Development Road is envisioned as a crucial trade route integrating railways, roads, ports, and cities across Iraq and Türkiye, aiming to enhance economic collaboration. Encompassing about 745 miles or 1,200 kilometers of railway and highways, the project will link the upcoming Great Faw Port, which is set to become the largest port in the Middle East. Uraloglu emphasized that this initiative serves not only as a trade facilitator but also as a trial run aiming to keep these transportation corridors active, with monitoring set in place for the trucks leaving Türkiye.

Renewed transport routes re-establish trade connections

With the reopening of the transit route through Iraq, which had been closed since 2003 due to conflict, the new system allows for renewed transit transport from Europe to the Middle East. This achievement is particularly meaningful as it reestablishes direct land routes to both Kuwait and Jordan after decades. Notably, three vehicles carrying goods from Germany recently departed, signifying the first shipment to Kuwait in 22 years, followed by a vehicle transporting goods set to travel to Jordan for the first time in 14 years — a significant development considering the closures in both Iraq and Syria.

The launch of the Türkiye-Kuwait and Germany-Jordan truck transport system marks the beginning of a new era for trade connectivity in the region. The Development Road Initiative is expected to significantly enhance logistical efficiency and economic collaboration. Both domestic and international stakeholders are optimistic about the prospects of this new system paving the way for increased trade opportunities.
