In his statement on social media platform X, he expressed, “The US welcomes the successful rescue of all hostages held by the Maduro regime at the Argentinian Embassy in Caracas. Following a precise operation, all hostages are now safely on US soil.” The rescued individuals, who have been under the threat of arrest for their political activities, had taken shelter since March 2023.

These opposition members are allies of Maria Corina Machado, an outspoken critic of President Nicolas Maduro. Machado has spearheaded protests following the controversial presidential election of July 2022, which resulted in widespread accusations of electoral fraud and violence. After Maduro’s claimed victory, numerous Latin American nations, alongside independent observers, have demanded clarity regarding the election results, highlighting the domestic and international unrest.

The electoral dispute incited protests, leading to tragic outcomes; approximately 28 individuals lost their lives, and over 2,400 were imprisoned. Among those who took refuge in the embassy were Pedro Urruchurtu, the international coordinator of Vente Venezuela, and Magalli Meda, some of Machado’s key supporters.

Initially, six individuals sought asylum within the embassy, but one, Fernando Martinez Mottola, chose to surrender in December 2024 and later received parole. Unfortunately, he passed away from health complications on February 26.

Argentinian President Javier Milei’s administration acknowledged the operation’s success, expressing appreciation for the safe extraction of the opposition figures. In 2022 and 2023, the crisis in Venezuela escalated significantly, leading to renewed U.S. sanctions under President Donald Trump.

Past confrontations between Maduro and Trump escalated when the latter sought to deport Venezuelan nationals. While Maduro initially refused to accept deportees, he eventually conceded. Recently, the U.S. has repatriated over 250 individuals, alleging their affiliation with the Tren de Aragua gang, to a prison in El Salvador. Maduro’s government condemned this action as “human trafficking.”

Rubio, a vocal critic of the Venezuelan government, has been instrumental in shaping U.S. policy regarding Venezuela. During a visit in March to Guyana, Rubio indicated support for the country facing territorial disputes with Caracas, saying, “I have full confidence saying it now as secretary of state — there will be consequences for adventurism.” Under Maduro, Venezuela remains led by a populist left-wing regime that has faced severe economic turmoil and an exodus of seven million citizens, yet Maduro shows no signs of relinquishing control.
