This agreement comes in response to clashes between fighters from Chad’s Defence and Security Forces and the Miski Self-Defence Committee that occurred between 2019 and 2020 over significant gold mine exploitation. As part of the accord, all mining permits in the Miski region will be nullified, and any mining activities will be halted pending a thorough survey.

The Miski Self-Defence Committee has historically blocked government personnel from accessing the region, reflecting ongoing tensions. Committee president Djimet Chava expressed optimism regarding the new accord, asserting, “It is for the two sides to respect their engagements.” He also emphasized his group’s commitment to negotiation over conflict.
