On April 2, 2025, India and Chile commenced negotiations for a comprehensive economic partnership agreement during a bilateral meeting attended by Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This partnership is expected to enhance collaborations particularly in critical minerals, establishing resilient supply and value chains, and addressing food security through agricultural cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of growing defence cooperation, stating, “The growing cooperation in the field of defence is a symbol of our deep mutual trust.” Both nations aim to strengthen defense industrial manufacturing and enhance security collaboration to combat organized crime and terrorism. The partnership highlights Chile’s role as an important partner for India in Latin America.
During the discussions, they celebrated the signing of a Letter of Intent, emphasizing Chile’s status as the “gateway to Antarctica.” Modi noted, “We welcome the agreement reached today on the Letter of Intent between the two sides to enhance cooperation in this important area.” The geographic proximity of Chile to Antarctica allows for significant cooperation in expeditions and scientific research.
President Boric praised the historical ties, stating, “Today, we have come to consolidate the seven decades of our relation with India.” Modi also recognized untapped investment potential during their talks and stressed the necessity for enhanced trade collaboration. Cooperation in agriculture will be functional to ensure food security, drawing from the strengths of both nations.
