Houthis Report Coalition Airstrikes in Northern Yemen as Tensions Escalate
The Houthi group reported that the US-UK coalition conducted 12 airstrikes in Amran, northern Yemen. The strikes targeted Harf Sufyan, but details on casualties remain unclear. This escalation follows claims by the Houthis of attacks against US vessels and support for Gaza amid ongoing conflicts. The US-led coalition has enhanced airstrike activities in response to Houthi attacks.
On Friday, the Houthi group reported that a coalition of the United States and the United Kingdom executed 12 airstrikes targeting Amran province in northern Yemen. As per the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV channel, these airstrikes were directed at the Harf Sufyan district; however, details regarding casualties or damage resulting from the strikes were not provided.
There has been no immediate response from officials representing the United States or the United Kingdom regarding the reported airstrikes. Since 2014, the Houthi group has maintained control over the province of Amran, which is located approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of Yemen’s capital, Sanaa.
Additionally, on Thursday, the Houthis reported six more airstrikes conducted by the US-UK coalition in Sanaa, Amran, and Al-Hudaydah. This increase in military activity follows the Houthis’ claim of having targeted the USS Harry Truman aircraft carrier in the northern Red Sea and launching missile and drone strikes on Israel.
Supporting the Gaza Strip amidst significant casualties, the Houthis have employed missiles and drones against Israeli cargo vessels in the Red Sea. They assert that these actions are a show of solidarity with the people affected by the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in over 46,000 fatalities in Gaza since the onset of hostilities on October 7, 2023.
Since the beginning of 2024, a US-led coalition has been actively conducting airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen, claiming these strikes are in retaliation for the Houthis’ attacks in the Red Sea. The situation has led to occasional retaliatory actions from the Houthis.
The recent reports reveal a significant escalation in military actions between the Houthi group and the US-UK coalition, particularly focusing on airstrikes in northern Yemen and retaliatory strikes in the Red Sea. With ongoing conflict in the region, the situation remains critical, emphasizing the complex geopolitical climate surrounding Yemen and its implications for regional stability.
