Election 2025: Ken Kolowski Leads Doug Bernabei in Peru Mayoral Race

Incumbent Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski leads Doug Bernabei with 1,679 to 561 votes, as unofficial results indicate. The race, initially agreed to be non-contentious, has seen rising tensions on social media. Key topics discussed include the municipal pool proposal and differing perspectives on the city’s economic issues. Official results will be posted once available.

In the recent mayoral contest in Peru, incumbent Mayor Ken Kolowski significantly outperformed his opponent, former Police Chief Doug Bernabei, securing 1,679 votes compared to Bernabei’s 561, according to unofficial results with all precincts accounted for, prior to early voting totals. Both candidates had initially agreed to maintain a cordial race during their February forum; however, they have since exchanged pointed criticisms on social media in recent weeks.

During a questionnaire from the Shaw Local News Network, the candidates expressed their views on employing the hotel/motel fund for the development of a municipal pool, following a favorable outcome from the previous November referendum. Mayor Kolowski asserted that the pool would serve as an essential revenue source for the city, while Bernabei committed to full support for the project, emphasizing the importance of public opinion.

Bernabei stated, “I look forward to the current pool study and recommendation that is forthcoming from a very dedicated group of two aldermen, two community members and the parks and recreation director, who are diligently working as a committee to advance the building of the Peru Pool.” In their discussions, the candidates also differed regarding the most pressing issue facing the city; Kolowski pointed to inflation, while Bernabei highlighted a looming financial crisis.

Kolowski emphasized that although Peru had experienced rapid growth over the past four years, sustaining it amidst inflation remains a challenge. He suggested that prudent budget management would be crucial in combating inflation and supporting continued growth. Conversely, Bernabei warned about a severe financial crisis, stating, “In just these past four years, the general fund budget has exploded to well over $23 million, and the $4.3 million has been spent away.” Official election results will be made available online as they emerge.

Mayor Ken Kolowski holds a commanding lead over Doug Bernabei in the Peru mayoral race. Despite initial promises of a civil contest, the candidates have engaged in social media disputes regarding local issues, particularly a proposed municipal pool funded by hotel/motel revenues. They also presented conflicting views on the city’s most critical concern, addressing either inflation or financial crisis. The election results will soon be available for public viewing.
