Tragic Casualties as RSF Shelling Continues in North Darfur
In North Darfur, RSF shelling has resulted in the deaths of nine civilians and injuries to seventeen individuals, with additional attacks in surrounding areas. The Sudanese Air Force retaliated with airstrikes that destroyed multiple RSF vehicles and disrupted their operations. The ongoing conflict continues to impact the local population severely, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Recent shelling by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, has resulted in at least nine civilian deaths and 17 injuries, as reported by the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division. Additionally, during the Eid El Fitr celebrations, RSF also attacked El Obeid in North Kordofan, killing a child and injuring eight others.
In response to RSF aggression, the Sudanese Air Force conducted successful operations against RSF forces in El Fasher. This included repelling a ground assault that destroyed four military vehicles and resulted in numerous RSF fatalities. Airstrikes also targeted an RSF supply convoy, annihilating 12 combat vehicles and compelling their retreat.
Furthermore, on Saturday evening, five displaced individuals sustained serious injuries due to bombing at Shangil Tobaya camp by the SAF. The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees accused the SAF of intentionally targeting civilians and infrastructure. However, efforts to obtain comments from the SAF were unsuccessful.
Prior to these events, the SAF deployed warplanes to bomb the weekly market in North Darfur’s Tora region, leading to significant casualties, with estimates of the dead possibly reaching hundreds. Maj Gen Ahmed Elkhader Saleh, commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, has expressed determination to break the RSF siege of El Fasher, asserting that “victory was looming on the horizon.”
Since May of the previous year, El Fasher has been embroiled in conflict, with the RSF intensifying its siege in an effort to seize the last major government stronghold in Darfur. The ongoing conflict has led to mass displacement and destruction of essential infrastructure, including hospitals and water sources.
The recent shelling by RSF in North Darfur has resulted in civilian casualties and has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis. The SAF’s response involved airstrikes and ground assaults that aimed to dismantle RSF capabilities. Despite these actions, the region remains unstable and the fighting has led to significant humanitarian concerns, including injuries to displaced individuals and destruction of vital infrastructure. The ongoing conflict poses a serious threat to the remaining government-controlled areas in Darfur, necessitating urgent attention.
