Netball Fiji Faces Crisis as 15 Associations Call for Leadership Change

Netball Fiji faces turmoil as 15 of its 19 associations demand leadership changes, leading to a walkout during a special meeting. President RubyAnn Sorovaki-Bainimarama is seeking guidance on resolving the crisis, while calls for reform include a reconsideration of the Fiji Pearls’ team composition. Netball Fiji is currently embroiled in a significant crisis, following a walkout by representatives from 15 of the 19 affiliated associations during a special general meeting held in Suva. This upheaval has raised concerns for Netball Fiji’s president, RubyAnn Sorovaki-Bainimarama, who is actively seeking advice on resolving the stalemate. Local media reports indicate that these associations are demanding changes in leadership within the organization.

RubyAnn Sorovaki-Bainimarama has confirmed that the motions presented during the meeting adhered to constitutional guidelines. However, she expressed a desire for the representatives to remain and engage in discussions regarding the future direction of Netball Fiji, rather than leaving the assembly prematurely. The meeting was convened by Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs, president of the Suva Netball Association, along with other heads from affiliated associations.

Alumeci Vosararawa-Sachs articulated the perspective of the associations by stating, “Without us (netball associations) they are nothing.” She underscored that one of the pressing issues to be addressed was the composition of the Fiji Pearls, which currently consists solely of players from Suva. Additionally, Vosararawa-Sachs conveyed that the associations would refrain from affiliation with Netball Fiji if Sorovaki-Bainimarama and her executive team were to remain in leadership.

Furthermore, she remarked, “We will seek judicial advice by informing World Netball and also inform the Ministry of Justice to deregister Netball Fiji.” This indicates a serious escalation in the conflict, suggesting legal actions as a possible route for the dissatisfied associations to pursue.

The situation within Netball Fiji reflects significant discontent among member associations regarding leadership and representation.
