Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has encouraged the submission of email nominations for a new interim president in Tigray, following political turmoil involving the ouster of Getachew Reda. His removal and subsequent demands for federal intervention signal escalating division within the Tigrayan political landscape, primarily between supporters of Getachew and Debretsion Gebremichael.

In a recent development, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed proposed that residents of Tigray nominate candidates for an interim president through email, amidst concerns of escalating tensions following a political upheaval. This suggestion aligns with his earlier parliamentary address supporting the interim administration’s leadership until the forthcoming national elections.

Getachew Reda, who was appointed last year as part of a peace agreement concluding a two-year conflict, has been reportedly residing in Addis Ababa for two weeks. His expulsion from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) followed a rival faction’s takeover of a crucial town, further exacerbating internal divisions within the party.

The political discord within the TPLF has been evident since August, during which a significant party congress was conducted without Getachew’s involvement. A faction loyal to the longstanding TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael emerged in opposition to Getachew, leading to his subsequent ouster and calls for federal intervention, amid accusations against Eritrea’s support for Debretsion’s group, a claim that remains contested by Debretsion’s supporters.

The situation in Tigray highlights the ongoing struggles for power within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, reflecting deepening political divisions. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s call for virtual nominations further complicates the region’s governance, raising questions about stability and future elections.
