Egypt Condemns Israel’s Agency for Displacement of Gaza Population
Egypt condemned Israel’s new agency to displace Palestinians from Gaza and the approval of additional West Bank settlements. It described the situation as forced displacement, violating international law, and called for a firm international response. Thousands of Palestinians have been displaced due to renewed military offensives in Gaza.
On March 25, Egypt expressed strong condemnation regarding Israel’s formation of an agency intended to facilitate the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, alongside its recent sanction of 13 additional settlements in the West Bank. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry criticized the concept of “voluntary departure,” deeming it baseless and asserting that the circumstances surrounding these displacements, which are enshrouded in violence and the obstruction of humanitarian aid, constitute forced displacement—a violation of international law.
In its formal statement, Egypt urged the international community and the United Nations Security Council to respond decisively to these persistent Israeli provocations. The statement emphasized the rights of Palestinians to self-determination and the establishment of a sovereign state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.
Additionally, the Israeli Defence Ministry has announced that a new directorate will be established to facilitate the “voluntary relocation” of Palestinians from Gaza to unspecified third countries. This body will operate under the Ministry of Defence and manage the relocation process for Gaza residents who show interest in moving abroad; however, no third countries have been officially identified as potential locations for these individuals.
This development comes on the heels of Israel resuming its military offensive in Gaza, effectively nullifying a two-month ceasefire. As a result, thousands more Palestinians have faced displacement due to intensified bombardments, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region. Previous proposals to relocate Gaza’s population to neighboring nations, such as those presented by former US President Donald Trump, faced global outcry and were subsequently retracted.
In summary, Egypt’s condemnation highlights significant international concerns regarding Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and the West Bank. The establishment of an agency to facilitate Palestinian displacement, coupled with the intensification of military offensives, has raised ethical and legal questions about forced displacement practices. Egypt’s call for a firm international response reiterates the necessity for a resolution to uphold Palestinian rights and autonomy.
