Benin and Togo’s Outstanding Electricity Debt to Nigeria Revealed

Benin and Togo owe Nigeria $8.84 million for electricity consumed in Q4 2024, as reported by NERC. The payments made by international customers were only 37.08% of the total invoiced amount. Despite improvements in revenue collection efficiency by electricity distribution companies, some customers continue to default on their payments.

According to a report from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the Republic of Benin and Togo owe Nigeria approximately $8.84 million for electricity consumed during the fourth quarter of 2024. The report details the payments made by both domestic and international bilateral customers and special customers for the services invoiced by the Market Operator within that time frame.

The findings underscore the payment challenges faced by international customers and highlight the need for financial adherence in the Nigerian electricity supply sector. The increase in collection efficiency from the previous quarter indicates improvement, yet the non-payment by certain customers continues to pose significant issues for the industry.
