Sudan Army Progresses in Khartoum, Reclaims Key Government Buildings

The Sudanese military reported significant advances in Khartoum by reclaiming key buildings, including the presidential palace and Central Bank, while pressures on the RSF continue. Despite these gains, the nation remains divided, and violence persists in regions such as Darfur.

On Saturday, Sudan’s military announced a significant advancement in central Khartoum after reclaiming the presidential palace. According to army spokespeople, multiple key structures, including the state intelligence headquarters and the Central Bank, have been retaken from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has vowed to achieve “full liberation” of central Khartoum as the military continues to exert pressure on the RSF across the city.

While the military has made strides in the capital, Sudan remains divided. The Sudanese Armed Forces control the east and north, whereas the RSF operates predominantly in the western region of Darfur and parts of the south. Recent reports from activists indicate that a paramilitary attack in remote North Darfur resulted in numerous civilian casualties, emphasizing the ongoing violence outside the capital.

In the initial stages of the conflict that erupted in April 2023, paramilitary groups overran and looted Sudan’s national institutions in Khartoum. An RSF spokesperson acknowledged a withdrawal from some central locations; however, they stated, “the battle has not been decided yet,” highlighting ongoing combat near the airport.

Sudan’s military has achieved notable victories in central Khartoum, reclaiming crucial government buildings and asserting control amid ongoing conflict. Despite the advances, the nation remains split, with significant violence reported in regions like Darfur. The military’s claim of continued pressure on the RSF indicates that the situation remains dynamic and dangerous, as both sides prepare for further confrontations.
