Mozambique: President Chapo Reports Decrease in Social Unrest Post-Elections

He stated, “The tension is going down and we hope it will get lower and lower.”

Chapo pointed out that other nations in the region have also faced post-election unrest, akin to Mozambique’s current situation. He referenced an agreement signed on March 5 as a foundational step for dialogue aimed at fostering peace among Mozambicans. According to Chapo, “Thinking differently is very good… But it’s not by thinking differently that we can use violence.”

Since October 21, demonstrations have persisted, instigated by former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who contests the election results favoring Chapo. President Chapo expressed his belief that understanding the motives behind the protests can lead to a decline in violence. He emphasized, “We are working and we will continue to work to pacify the country more and more.”

He further underscored that for Mozambique to progress, peace and security are paramount. While the protests, now at a reduced scale, reflect grievances over living costs and social issues, Chapo highlighted the need for collective understanding regarding the true nature of the unrest. Tragically, since the elections, reports indicate the loss of at least 361 lives, including minors, alongside extensive property damage including schools and health facilities.
