Impact of Mali’s Deteriorating Security on Border Areas of Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea

The humanitarian situation in Mali’s border areas is critical, with high percentages of localities experiencing violence, flooding, and economic shocks. Displacement rates are also alarming, particularly in Ségou, where many residents have fled their communities due to insecurity and environmental crises.

The security situation in Mali has significantly deteriorated, impacting border regions in Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea, as evidenced by REACH’s Humanitarian Situation Monitoring reports. Between July and October 2024, 97% of assessed areas in Tombouctou and 73% in Ségou experienced shocks related to insecurity, violence, or looting. Notably, Goundam and Gourma-Rharous reported a complete 100% impact on surveyed localities, while 97% of localities in the Niafunké circle, adjacent to Mauritania, were also affected.

Additional humanitarian crises were noted, with flooding impacting 72% of localities in Tombouctou and 62% in Ségou. Rising market prices further exacerbated the situation, affecting 58% of localities in Tombouctou and 43% in Ségou. The cumulative effects of insecurity and environmental factors have further destabilized the region’s economy and livelihood.

Furthermore, population displacement due to these crises was significant; 34% of localities in Tombouctou reported forced evacuations, and 23% in Ségou faced similar issues. Displacement generally remained within local regions, with less than 25% of the population affected. However, in Ségou, 24% of localities reported over 50% of their population had fled, indicating a critical humanitarian crisis in these areas.

In summary, the deteriorating security situation in Mali poses severe challenges to the neighboring border areas of Mauritania, Senegal, and Guinea. The data reveal overwhelming impacts of violence, flooding, and economic instability, leading to significant displacements within these communities. Urgent humanitarian assistance is necessary to address these escalating crises and stabilize the affected regions.
