Uganda’s Parliament Approves UPDF Deployment in South Sudan

Uganda’s Parliament has approved the deployment of UPDF in South Sudan due to escalating unrest. Minister Hon. Jacob Oboth highlighted the urgent request from South Sudan’s President Kiir for support to prevent a security crisis. The Parliament of Uganda has endorsed the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in South Sudan amid civil unrest. The motion was presented by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Hon. Jacob Oboth, during a parliamentary session on March 20, 2025, chaired by Speaker Anita Among. The deployment, requested by South Sudan President Salva Kiir, was necessitated by escalating tensions in the Upper Nile State, prompting urgent military support from Uganda.

According to Hon. Oboth, President Kiir reached out to President Yoweri Museveni on March 10, 2025, under the established Protocol on Defence Cooperation and Status of Forces Agreement, requesting assistance to avert a security crisis. Museveni’s decision to deploy the UPDF is founded on constitutional mandates for peace enforcement and reflects Uganda’s commitment to regional stability and cooperation.

Oboth highlighted the significance of this move, stating that the instability in South Sudan could have detrimental effects on Uganda’s security and economic landscape. The UPDF’s presence in South Sudan aims to stabilize the area and prevent further conflict escalation, which could adversely affect both nations and the broader continent.

Additionally, Hon. Gilbert Olanya, representing FDC from Kilak South County, supported the motion, emphasizing the importance of peace for local constituents and business operations in South Sudan. He asserted strong local support for the UPDF deployment, noting the shared pursuit of peace between Uganda and South Sudan.
