Sudan Army Advances Towards Republican Palace Amid Heightened Conflict
The Sudanese Armed Forces are advancing toward the Republican Palace in Khartoum amid fierce battles and civilian turmoil. Significant military actions have led to numerous casualties, with RSF forces committing widespread destruction in the region, including the burning of villages.
Fierce battles persist across Sudan as the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) intensify their offensive, approaching the Republican Palace in Khartoum. Civilians are increasingly trapped in the violence, with a significant number of fatalities and detentions occurring over the past week. This military operation aims to reclaim Greater Khartoum, which was lost to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at the onset of the conflict in April 2023.
The SAF has strategically moved within 500 meters of the Republican Palace, marking an aggressive push against RSF positions. Reports confirm that the SAF has destroyed RSF convoys and is making significant gains within Khartoum’s city center. Disturbing accounts reveal the scale of fighting, with explosions and gunfire echoing through areas such as El Qasr and El Jamaa streets. The SAF has also taken control of the El Fadil Hospital building, leading towards the Foreign Ministry.
Amidst this turmoil, a local emergency group has reported at least 50 civilian deaths last week in Khartoum, including volunteers aiding in the humanitarian crisis. Additionally, 82 individuals have been detained by the RSF and affiliated militias. The ongoing conflict has severely hampered aid efforts, with reports of volunteer harassment, including detentions and torture.
In North Darfur, the SAF’s 6th Infantry Division has claimed successes in combat operations, reporting the deaths of an RSF commander and multiple fighters. Airstrikes have also destroyed RSF vehicles, contributing to heightened violence. Furthermore, drone surveillance has evidenced the RSF’s destructive capabilities, leading to significant damage in urban areas.
A humanitarian crisis has deepened as Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab documented the burning of at least 18 villages by RSF forces, displacing thousands and devastating local economies. In North Kordofan, while a tenuous calm has returned to El Obeid after recent bombardments, the situation remains precarious for displaced populations, particularly in El Fula, where resources are severely stretched.
The conflict in Sudan continues to escalate as the SAF gains ground in Khartoum, approaching the Republican Palace while fighting intensifies in regions like North Darfur and North Kordofan. Civilian casualties are mounting, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation exacerbated by warring factions obstructing aid delivery. The destruction of villages and infrastructure further underscores the catastrophic impact of this ongoing conflict on the Sudanese populace.
