Recognition of Uganda Police Officers for Contributions to AUSSOM in Somalia

AUSSOM honored Uganda Police officers for their contributions to peace in Somalia at a ceremony in Mogadishu. The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) recently recognized the bravery of Uganda Police officers for their significant contributions to peace in Somalia. The event took place at the AUSSOM Force Headquarters in Mogadishu, attended by Police Commissioner and Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Hillary Sao Kanu, along with other senior officials.

During the ceremony, Mr. Bam acknowledged the officers’ resilience, dedication, and sacrifices in combating Al-Shabaab as part of the African Union mission. He emphasized their unwavering determination in overcoming high-risk challenges and restoring law and order, thereby fostering trust among the Somali populace.

The Uganda Formed Police Unit (UFPU-12), deployed in April 2024 as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), has played a pivotal role in providing operational support to the Somali Police Force. AIGP Kanu commended the officers for their courage and professionalism while executing high-risk patrols and bolstering community policing initiatives.

UFPU-12 Contingent Commander Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Justus Asiimwe praised the collaboration between Ugandan troops and the Nigerian Formed Police Unit, highlighting the bonds formed and mutual understanding developed during their service in Mogadishu.

Attending officials included AUSSOM Police Training Coordinator Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Samuel Asiedu Okanta, along with other senior figures from AUSSOM. The Formed Police Units provide critical operational support, security for key government events, and training for the Somali Police Force, enhancing the mission’s effectiveness alongside contributions from other countries, such as Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone.

In conclusion, the AUSSOM event underscored the exceptional contributions of Uganda Police officers to peace and stability in Somalia.
