Launch of Kenya’s First Data Tool to Shape Environmental Policy Guidelines

Kenya has recently launched its first data tool, the “Compendium of Environment Statistics Report,” aimed at shaping the nation’s environmental policy guidelines. This initiative, developed by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in collaboration with the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), consolidates crucial environmental data from all 47 counties.

The report encompasses diverse topics including environmental conditions, resource management, waste management, natural disasters, and environmental protection, enabling businesses, researchers, and civil society to create effective climate action plans. Kenya faces significant environmental challenges, with many disasters stemming from extreme climatic events, particularly floods and droughts. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction estimates that three to four million Kenyans are affected annually by such disasters, threatening the nation’s developmental achievements.

Macdonald Obudho, the KNBS Director-General, emphasized the importance of this data tool in guiding policy formulation on issues like environmental degradation and urbanization. He also noted that it would aid in fulfilling national and international commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.

Experts at the launch highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental challenges, urging collective action to protect disadvantaged communities and safeguard natural resources with the aid of accurate data and informed policies.
