Community Discontent Over Inauguration Lockout at State House

Residents of Havana’s informal settlement are displeased with the government’s relocation of Independence Day celebrations and the presidential inauguration to State House, limiting public attendance due to anticipated heavy rains. Residents of the Havana informal settlement have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government’s decision to relocate the Independence Day celebrations and the inauguration of Namibia’s fifth president to State House. This change, attributed to the anticipated heavy rains in central Namibia, restricts attendance to a select few.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology announced that public attendance will not be permitted at the 35th Independence celebrations and the inauguration ceremony for Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. This decision has sparked disappointment among community members.

Karin Matheus, age 45, conveyed her dismay, stating, “We wanted to see our president inaugurated.” Similarly, Elise Paulus, 34, shared her frustration, remarking, “We are unhappy. We voted for her; we wanted to see her inaugurated.”

Tensions escalated at State House, culminating in a scuffle as individuals attempted to gain entry but were denied due to spatial constraints.
