Zimbabwe Vigil Diary – March 15, 2025

The March 15, 2025, Vigil highlighted deepening divisions within ZANU PF, with Chris Mutsvangwa criticizing General Chivengwa. While some, like the Geza Movement, are hopeful for a leadership change, public skepticism persists. The current regime’s oppressive tactics raise concerns about civil society’s ability to challenge the status quo. Vigil meetings continue to advocate for human rights in Zimbabwe, and support for the Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe is ongoing.

On March 15, 2025, supporters gathered at the Vigil outside the Zimbabwe Embassy in London. Attendees included Rohan Gupta, Jonathan Kariwo, Pamela Magwizi, Genius Mamwadhu, Philip Maponga, Victor Simoni, Geraldine Takundwa, and Bee Tapa. Photos from the event can be found on the Vigil’s Flickr page.

During the Vigil, tensions within ZANU PF were evident as Chris Mutsvangwa publicly criticized retired General and Vice-President Chivengwa. He questioned Chivengwa’s military credentials and condemned his treatment of women, particularly highlighting the plight of Mary Chivengwa, his estranged wife, who faces criminal charges and health issues.

The Geza Movement appears to favor General Chivengwa as a potential successor to President Mnangagwa. They optimistically predict that Mnangagwa’s presidency will conclude by March 31, 2025; however, general skepticism remains among the public regarding the effectiveness of such political maneuvers against his regime.

Additionally, many believe confronting the Mugabe regime was relatively simpler compared to the current administration, which is perceived as increasingly self-serving and corrupt. The atmosphere of fear instilled by governmental forces has significantly inhibited civil society’s resistance, allowing Mnangagwa and his associates to wield unchecked power while external adversaries, including China, exploit the nation’s resources.

It is imperative for the people of Zimbabwe to mobilize and take decisive action to avert further decay and secure a sustainable future.

The next Vigil meeting is scheduled for April 1, 2025, from 2 PM to 5 PM outside the Zimbabwe Embassy. The Vigil maintains a presence every first and third Saturday of the month. The Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR) partners with the Vigil, actively fundraisers in the UK, and works to translate the Vigil’s mission into action on the ground.

The book ‘Zimbabwe Emergency,’ chronicling the ongoing struggles within Zimbabwe as viewed by the diaspora, is also available for purchase at the Vigil and on Amazon, with proceeds aiding both the Vigil and ROHR’s initiatives in Zimbabwe.

For updates, individuals can follow the Vigil and ROHR on social media.

The Vigil’s efforts in London highlight significant political unrest and human rights violations in Zimbabwe. Despite the potential support for a change in leadership, public skepticism regarding the effectiveness of movements like Geza remains high. The atmosphere of fear stemming from governmental actions continues to muzzle civil society, necessitating a united stand from the populace to combat corruption and secure a viable future for Zimbabwe.
