The Government of India has confirmed that twenty-five Indian nationals have been sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This announcement was made during a parliamentary session on March 20 by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, in response to inquiries about Indian prisoners abroad.

Minister Singh highlighted that there are currently 10,152 Indian prisoners, including undertrials, in foreign jails. The safety and well-being of Indian nationals in these foreign prisons is a priority for the government. The Minister elaborated that Indian nationals are facing death sentences in eight countries, with the UAE accounting for 25 individuals, while others are in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Kuwait, and several other nations.

Furthermore, Singh noted that Indian diplomatic missions provide support to these nationals by facilitating consular access and assisting in legal matters such as filing appeals and mercy petitions. A query regarding the execution of Indians abroad revealed that executions have occurred in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia over the past five years.

In 2024 alone, three Indians were executed in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, in addition to one execution in Zimbabwe. In contrast, the UAE did not officially share any information on executions. However, Singh mentioned, “As per the informal information available with the Mission, no Indians have been executed from 2020 to 2024.”
