Somalia Endorses Qatar’s Mediation in DRC-Rwanda Peace Talks
Somalia supports Qatar’s mediation efforts in talks between DRC and Rwanda aimed at resolving conflict. The Somali government praises the commitment to a ceasefire and Qatar’s role in promoting dialogue and peace. The discussions were the first since a rebellion intensified in eastern DRC, but the M23 rebels’ compliance with peace efforts remains uncertain.
Somalia has expressed its endorsement of Qatar’s diplomatic mediation, which facilitated a meeting between the presidents of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda in Doha. This engagement aimed to alleviate persistent tensions between President Felix Tshisekedi of the DRC and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, which stem from the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.
In a statement released by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government hailed this initiative as “an important step toward fostering peace and stability in the eastern DRC and the wider region.” It also commended the commitment of both leaders to pursue an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, emphasizing solidarity with the populations of both nations in their quest for peace.
Somalia recognized Qatar’s influential role in advocating for dialogues that resolve conflicts peacefully, stating, “We extend our appreciation to the State of Qatar for its role in promoting constructive dialogue and mediation to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.”
The Doha summit represented the first direct talks between Presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi since the resurgence of the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels, who escalated attacks in eastern DRC. These rebels, accused by Kinshasa of receiving support from Rwanda, initially captured Goma and advanced towards Bukavu over the course of January and February.
Although both leaders advocated for an immediate ceasefire, uncertainties loom regarding the willingness of the M23 rebels to adhere to the proposed agreement, especially after their prior withdrawal from peace negotiations in Angola.
In conclusion, Somalia’s endorsement of Qatar’s mediation efforts signifies a supportive step toward fostering regional stability between the DRC and Rwanda. The meeting between the two presidents is a hopeful endeavor aimed at ceasing hostilities, building on commitments made for peace, though challenges remain regarding the M23 rebels’ compliance with the ceasefire agreement.
