As per government data presented to the Rajya Sabha, over 10,000 Indians are currently imprisoned abroad, with 49 facing death sentences. The majority of these individuals are held in Saudi Arabia (2,633) and the United Arab Emirates (2,518), indicating significant numbers in these countries. India remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its nationals incarcerated overseas.

Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed that Indian missions actively monitor the situation of Indian citizens in foreign jails. He emphasized that these missions remain alert to incidents involving Indians detained for allegedly violating local laws. Additionally, the government prioritizes the welfare of its citizens and engages with local authorities regarding the release of Indian prisoners.

Nepal is noted to have 1,317 Indians imprisoned, followed by Qatar (611), Kuwait (387), and Malaysia (338). Other countries hosting Indian prisoners include Pakistan, China, the United States, Oman, Russia, and Myanmar. Notably, Kuwait has executed 25 Indians since 2020, the highest among the countries reporting death row sentences.

The specific statistics show that of the sentenced individuals, 25 are in the UAE, 11 in Saudi Arabia, six in Malaysia, and three in Kuwait, with additional cases in several other nations. The UAE reported no executions of Indian nationals since 2020, although three executions occurred earlier this year.

In terms of legal support, the Indian government ensures that prisoners receive consular assistance, legal aid, and help in appealing their cases. The Indian missions abroad frequently liaises with local law enforcement to facilitate expedient judicial processes for its nationals.
