Mozambique and Zambia Forge Energy Interconnection Agreement

Mozambique and Zambia have signed an agreement to interconnect their energy systems, enhancing electricity supply in the SADC region. Executed by EDM and ZESCO, the project involves a $411.5 million investment, a 400 kV transmission line, and aims to strengthen energy trade and regional cooperation.

On Wednesday, Mozambique and Zambia formalized an agreement to enhance energy interconnection, focusing on the electricity supply within the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). This initiative will be executed by the Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) in collaboration with the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO).

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by António Manda, Permanent Secretary of Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, and Makoze Chikote, the Zambian Minister of Energy. The project, estimated to require an investment of 411.5 million dollars, aims to augment energy supply capacities and solidify Mozambique’s role in the regional energy sector.

Additionally, the interconnection is intended to facilitate energy trading among SADC members, resulting in increased revenue opportunities for Mozambique. The framework details the establishment of a 400 kV power transmission line, covering approximately 376 kilometers from the Matambo Substation in Mozambique to the Chipata West Substation in Zambia.

At the signing ceremony, Joaquim Ou-chim, Chairperson of EDM, remarked that this agreement signifies the transition from planning into execution for this long-anticipated project. He emphasized the critical need for regional cooperation, stating that in today’s global energy landscape, integration is essential for creating a self-reliant and interconnected African continent.

The signing of the interconnection agreement between Mozambique and Zambia marks a significant step towards enhancing energy supply within the SADC region. This project, supported by a substantial investment, will not only bolster the capabilities of both nations’ energy systems but will also enable greater cooperation and revenue generation.
