Stephen Acquah, a footballer, has appeared in an Accra Circuit Court charged with robbery and escaping lawful custody following an incident in which he allegedly robbed a salesperson, Christina Benyiwa Baidoo, of her personal belongings. The robbery occurred at around 4:30 AM in Sakumono as the victim was en route to an appointment in Cape Coast. Acquah has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The court, presided by Mr. Jojo Amoah Hagan, has granted bail to Acquah in the amount of GH¢100,000, requiring two sureties, one of which must be backed by movable or immovable property. The prosecution plans to add a charge of causing harm against him. The next hearing is scheduled for March 27, 2025.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Augustine Kingsley Oppong stated that Acquah confronted Baidoo at around 5:00 AM near Vivian Farms, demanding her handbag, which contained vital identification cards, cash amounting to GH¢160, and a mobile phone. Following her refusal, a struggle ensued, during which Acquah allegedly inflicted injuries to her hand with a knife, causing severe lacerations.
Despite her injuries, Baidoo ultimately surrendered her handbag. Acquah fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter with the aid of the Sakumono Police Patrol Team. Following the encounter, Baidoo was transported to the Sakumono Hospital and subsequently referred to Tema General Hospital for treatment of her wounds, which required stitching.
In a surprising turn, while being escorted to the charge office at the police station with handcuffs, Acquah escaped but was recaptured after a brief pursuit by officers. A bag and the weapon used in the assault were recovered during this incident. The prosecution indicated that Acquah admitted his involvement in the crime during his caution statement.
Stephen Acquah faces serious charges including robbery and escaping lawful custody related to an altercation with salesperson Christina Benyiwa Baidoo. The court proceedings will continue with the next adjournment set for March 27, 2025. The case highlights the ongoing concerns regarding personal safety and crime in the region, with the prosecution prepared to amend the charges further based on the gravity of the victim’s injuries sustained during the robbery.
