Factional Tensions in Zanu PF: Allegations of Assassination Plot Against Chiwenga

In Zimbabwe, the General Chiwenga Voluntary Supporters Association (GCVSA) has alleged that mercenaries have been contracted to assassinate Vice President Chiwenga amid escalating factionalism within the ruling Zanu PF party. This internal strife features open power struggles between Chiwenga and President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Christopher Mutsvangwa, Zanu PF spokesperson, has publicly criticized Chiwenga, labeling him as cruel and unelectable. Chiwenga has requested actions against Mutsvangwa’s remarks, yet no measures have been taken to address the situation thus far.

The GCVSA has disclosed its knowledge of a plot targeting both Chiwenga and any participants in the upcoming protest on March 31. Secretary General Ntokozo Msipha stated they were aware of mercenaries allegedly imported from Sierra Leone to eliminate Chiwenga, denouncing this as an act of war against Zimbabwe.

Supporters of Chiwenga are opposing Mnangagwa’s potential continuation in power beyond 2028, with a faction advocating for Mnangagwa to stay until at least 2030. Meanwhile, war veterans, under the leadership of Blessed Geza, are organizing a demonstration to protest against the cronyism attributed to Mnangagwa’s administration.

According to Msipha, the March 31 protest will symbolize a decisive movement against the oppression faced by Zimbabweans. He emphasized that the populace will not yield to intimidation or threats from the government, asserting that any unlawful orders from authorities against civilians would not be forgotten.
