AUC Chairperson Commends Doha Meeting Between DRC and Rwanda Leaders
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, welcomed the recent Doha meeting between leaders of Rwanda and the DRC. He commended their commitment to dialogue and a ceasefire, emphasizing the importance of peace for the region’s prosperity. On March 19, 2025, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, expressed his approval of the trilateral meeting held in Doha between leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Hosted by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, this meeting took place on March 18, 2025.
Attending the trilateral meeting were President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC. Chairperson Youssouf praised both leaders for their dedication to dialogue and for seeking peaceful resolutions to the crisis in Eastern DRC, highlighting that such engagement demonstrates true leadership.
The Chairperson emphasized the significance of peace, security, and stability for the prosperity of both nations and the broader Great Lakes region. He acknowledged the leaders’ reaffirmation of their commitment to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, as previously decided at the EAC and SADC summit on February 8, 2025.
The African Union continues to support African-led solutions to challenges faced on the continent, as seen in the Luanda and Nairobi processes. The constructive spirit of the Doha discussions aligns with these ongoing efforts and enhances existing regional mechanisms for peace.
Youssouf extended his gratitude to Qatar and His Highness the Amir for facilitating dialogue and fostering confidence among involved parties.
