10,152 Indians Imprisoned Abroad; UAE Reports 25 on Death Row

The Indian government reports that 10,152 nationals are imprisoned abroad, with 25 on death row in the UAE. The government emphasizes the safety of its citizens and provides legal assistance to those facing capital punishment. Over recent years, incidents of executions have occurred in several countries, but informal reports suggest no Indian executions in the UAE since 2020.

The Indian government has disclosed that there are 10,152 Indian nationals currently imprisoned in foreign jails, including 25 individuals sentenced to death in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This information was shared by Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh during a session in the Rajya Sabha, reaffirming the government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad.

The breakdown of Indian prisoners includes 25 on death row in the UAE, 11 in Saudi Arabia, six in Malaysia, three in Kuwait, and additional cases in Indonesia, Qatar, the US, and Yemen. Mr. Singh emphasized that the government prioritizes the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad, including those in foreign jails.

To assist Indian nationals facing serious charges, including death sentences, the Indian government is actively involved in exploring legal remedies. Mr. Singh stated, “Indian Missions/Posts abroad provide all possible assistance to Indian nationals who have been sentenced, including with death sentences by the foreign courts.”

In the last five years, several Indians have faced capital punishment in Malaysia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Notably, in 2024, three Indians were executed while in 2023, six executions were reported across Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.

Regarding executions in the UAE, Mr. Singh indicated that while no official data exists, informal estimates suggest that there have been no executions of Indian nationals from 2020 to 2024. He remarked, “No data available as the same is not shared by the UAE authorities. As per the informal information available with the Mission, no Indians have been executed from 2020 to 2024.”

In summary, the Indian government is actively monitoring and supporting its nationals incarcerated abroad, especially those facing death sentences. As of now, there are over 10,000 Indian prisoners in foreign jails, with notable cases in the UAE and other countries.
