WCC Announces Leadership Transition for Colombian Peace Dialogue

The WCC has announced leadership transitions for its peace dialogue efforts in Colombia, appointing Jenny Neme Neiva as the deputy special envoy. Dr. Humberto Shikiya becomes senior advisor, while Dr. Fernando Enns takes on the role of special envoy. These changes aim to strengthen the WCC’s integrated support for peace initiatives in Colombia, especially in light of recent humanitarian crises.

The World Council of Churches (WCC), in partnership with the United Nations, the Organization of American States, and the Roman Catholic Church, serves as a permanent supporter in the peace dialogues between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP’s Estado Mayor de los Bloques. Jenny Neme Neiva has been appointed as the WCC’s deputy special envoy to the peace dialogue. As a resident of Colombia, Neiva possesses extensive experience and understanding of the country’s peacebuilding efforts.

Dr. Humberto Shikiya transitions from his role as WCC special envoy, where he has served for two years, to become a senior advisor for peacebuilding in Colombia. He will work closely with Neiva in her new capacity. Shikiya commended Neiva, stating, “Jenny’s experience in peace and reconciliation work as a woman of faith…will contribute in a distinctive way to the peace process.”

Furthermore, Dr. Fernando Enns is appointed as the new special envoy, aiming to enhance the WCC’s integration with Colombia’s peace initiatives. Though Enns will not be based in Colombia, his periodic visits will provide necessary strategic direction. This leadership transition comes amid a humanitarian crisis in Catatumbo, increasing the urgency of the WCC’s mission.

Peter Prove, director of the WCC Commission of the Churches on International Affairs, emphasized the WCC’s dedication to Colombia’s peace process, stating, “Through this reconfigured and expanded representation…WCC reaffirms its steadfast commitment to supporting a just and sustainable peace in Colombia.” The WCC team is set to meet in Colombia from March 17-21 for discussions with governmental and UN representatives, as well as members of the DiPaz consortium and the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Mission.
