On Wednesday, the Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan reopened after nearly a month of closure, as confirmed by officials from both nations. This reopening enables the resumption of trade, which had been halted since February 21 due to Afghan authorities’ construction projects along the border, according to Pakistani forces.

The Torkham crossing serves as the primary transit route for goods and travelers between Pakistan and Afghanistan, with trade valued at over $1.6 billion in 2024, as reported by Pakistan’s foreign office. Naheed Khan, a senior police official in Pakistan’s Khyber district, stated that the “Torkham gate has been reopened for transport.” Moreover, Afghan customs clearing agent Hazrat Nabi Toor affirmed the reopening for truck movements between the two countries.

Hajji Hikmatullah, Afghanistan’s Torkham gate commissioner, noted that the reopening would facilitate the movement of trucks that had been stranded on both sides of the border. He further mentioned that passenger movement would commence on Friday. Hikmatullah emphasized the need for both nations to develop a “comprehensive strategy” to separate political issues from business affairs to enhance economic cooperation.

In light of the reopening, customs agent Asghar Ali highlighted that upon learning the news, numerous vehicles loaded with goods began converging at the border. He acknowledged the significant losses incurred by businesses due to the closure, stating, “Trade should not suffer in diplomatic and political wars between the two countries.”

Historically, border clashes have resulted in the closure of critical crossings like Torkham, severely impacting trade and hindering travel. The previous month, the closure led to a skirmish between the forces of both countries, resulting in injuries to three Pakistani civilians.

This reopening occurs amid heightened tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, primarily due to a rise in militant attacks within Pakistan’s western regions bordering Afghanistan. Islamabad has consistently accused Kabul of harboring militant groups that conduct cross-border operations, a claim Afghan authorities refute, insisting that Pakistan must address its internal security challenges.
