South Africa Enhances Connectivity with Google Cloud’s New R2.5 Billion Hub

South Africa will establish a R2.5 billion Google Cloud hub, joining a global network that promotes local services and is projected to boost the GDP by $2.1 billion and create 40,000 jobs by 2030. This initiative is part of broader training programs for learners and entrepreneurs, aimed at enhancing the continent’s tech sector and supporting numerous startups.

South Africa is set to join Google Cloud’s global network by establishing a new hub worth R2.5 billion, marking the first such initiative in Africa. This development will integrate South Africa into a network composed of 40 regions and 121 zones across the globe, enabling Google Cloud services to reach over 200 countries.

Ferdinand Steenkamp, co-founder of Cape Town-based Tregter, stated that this advancement is projected to contribute approximately $2.1 billion to the nation’s GDP and facilitate the creation of more than 40,000 jobs by 2030. He emphasized the significance of Africa’s internet growth, projected to reach $180 billion by 2025, which will represent 5.2% of the continent’s GDP.

Google South Africa has also made strides in training initiatives, conducting programs such as Cloud OnBoard, Cloud Hero, and Google Hustle Academy. These initiatives are designed to enhance knowledge on generative AI, machine learning, data analytics, and digital marketing among learners and business owners.

Furthermore, the launch of Google Cloud will augment existing programs for African startups, including the Black Founders Fund and Google for Startups Accelerator, which have already assisted 106 startups in raising over $263 million in funds and creating more than 2,800 jobs.

Steenkamp remarked on the positive impact of Google South Africa in fostering a supportive environment for tech entrepreneurs, ultimately presenting extensive advantages that extend well beyond the tech sector and contributing to the advancement of Africa’s technology landscape.
