According to the United Nations’ World Meteorological Organization (WMO), 2024 is recorded as the hottest year in 175 years. Professor Chris Hewitt from the WMO remarked, “That has never happened before, going back to 1850.”

The persistence of warmth into late 2024, despite the subsiding effects of the El Niño phenomenon, astonished scientists. Dr. John Kennedy, lead author of the WMO’s State of the Global Climate Report for 2024, stated that the prolonged warmth even as conditions became more neutral is “really quite extraordinary.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that the planet is “issuing more distress signals” and called for leaders to enhance their national climate actions.
