President Boluarte Reaffirms Commitment to Healthcare and Social Justice in Peru

President Dina Boluarte of Peru is making strides to improve conditions in historically neglected regions like Apurimac. By signing an addendum for the modernization of the Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital, her government demonstrates a commitment to healthcare and demands of social justice. The initiative involves an investment exceeding US$27 million and will significantly benefit healthcare services in the region.

On Wednesday, President Dina Boluarte reaffirmed her commitment to addressing the historical neglect of impoverished regions in Peru, including Apurimac, Puno, and Huancavelica. She stated that her government is actively working to change this narrative and improve conditions in these areas. “We are reversing the history of neglect in these regions… and we will continue to do so throughout Peru,” she declared as she oversaw the signing of an addendum to modernize the Guillermo Diaz de la Vega Hospital in Apurimac.

Reflecting on the political dynamics, the President criticized authorities who misuse social justice for political gain while asserting that her administration approaches these issues with genuine resolve. “We committed to reactivating the construction of hospitals… Our commitment to health is unwavering because health is a right for all Peruvians, not just a privileged few,” she emphasized.

The signing of the hospital modernization addendum is a significant advancement for health care in the region, made possible through collaboration between the Executive Branch and regional governments. Mrs. Boluarte remarked, “We cannot live in uncertainty or take advantage of certain situations… Those feelings of hate and political agitation do not contribute to nation-building.”

The hospital project will require an investment exceeding US$27 million, upgrading its designation from Level II-2 to Level III-1, thus enabling it to operate as a high-complexity healthcare center. The new establishment will feature 105 consultation rooms, 12 operating rooms, 293 beds, and specialized units, significantly enhancing healthcare services for the community.

“By unlocking several projects, we will benefit more than three million people in Apurímac with a modern, specialized, high-complexity hospital… ensuring international standards of quality and transparency,” stated Mrs. Boluarte. Additionally, this initiative aims to alleviate overcrowding at the Antonio Lorena Hospital in Cusco, where delays attributed to corruption have challenged healthcare access.

The President also addressed concerns about former regional governors who have faced legal repercussions due to corruption, asserting, “Today, our government has unlocked the Lorena Hospital project, and we are building it without corruption.” Furthermore, she brought forth discussions surrounding the death penalty, highlighting public support during 18 recent regional hearings convened by the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights.

In her closing remarks, Mrs. Boluarte indicated, “We are seriously considering the death penalty… Just as they take the lives of defenseless people with ease, we are considering taking their lives as well through the death penalty.” The signing ceremony was attended by prominent figures including UK Ambassador Gavin Cook, Apurimac Region Governor Percy Godoy, and Health Minister Cesar Vasquez, marking a pivotal moment in Peru’s healthcare advancement.
