Mozambique’s Municipalities Aim to Contribute to National Development Efforts

The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique vows to support development by creating a national development company to share essential equipment among municipalities. The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAMM) recently announced its commitment to contribute to the country’s development. During a meeting in Maputo with President Daniel Chapo, ANAMM’s president, João Ferreira, expressed their readiness to assist in enhancing municipal services and pledged that the association plans to establish a national development company to facilitate the acquisition of shared equipment among municipalities.

João Ferreira, who also serves as the mayor of Chimoio, detailed that this newly formed company will address the specific needs faced by various districts. The initiative aims to enhance the operational capacity of municipalities, thereby serving their communities more effectively.

Mozambique has been experiencing significant social unrest since October of last year, primarily triggered by protests against the election results favoring President Daniel Chapo of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo). Demonstrations have persisted as citizens voice their grievances over rising living costs and various other social issues.

According to reports by the electoral monitoring NGO Decide, at least 327 individuals have lost their lives during the protests, with around 750 individuals sustaining injuries from gunfire. The government has officially confirmed at least 80 deaths and noted widespread destruction, including damage to over 1,600 businesses, numerous schools, and healthcare facilities.
