Kazakhstan Assumes Presidency of United Nations Conference on Disarmament

Kazakhstan has assumed the Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, aiming to enhance global security cooperation. Under Permanent Representative Yerlan Alimbayev, the focus will be on pressing issues like nuclear disarmament and biological security. Eight meetings of the Subsidiary Bodies are scheduled between March and May to promote consensus-driven discussions.

Kazakhstan has officially taken on the Presidency of the Conference on Disarmament, as reported by DKnews.kz. During the opening plenary session, attended by prominent officials including the Director General of the UN Office in Geneva and Secretary General of the Conference on Disarmament, Tatiana Valovaya, Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Alimbayev, articulated his commitment to lead the Conference’s efforts in a transparent and inclusive manner while emphasizing Kazakhstan’s dedication to multilateralism and global cooperation in security matters.

The primary focus of this year’s Conference will be on the Subsidiary Bodies that address critical global security issues. Key topics include nuclear disarmament, prevention of nuclear warfare, negative security assurances, and halting the arms race in outer space. Additionally, discussions will encompass the challenges posed by artificial intelligence in military applications, and biological security concerns. A significant aspect of these discussions will involve President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s initiative to establish an International Agency for Biological Safety and Security.

Kazakhstan’s presidency is scheduled to involve eight meetings of the four Subsidiary Bodies, which will occur between March and May of this year. Kazakhstan anticipates productive engagement with all delegations and stakeholders to facilitate substantive outcomes characterized by compromise and consensus.
