Iraq’s FCOI Seeks UNDP Support for Asset Recovery and Extradition Efforts

The head of Iraq’s FCOI, Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, requested UNDP support for asset recovery and extradition efforts. During a meeting with UNDP representative Yama Torabi, Al-Lami praised the UNDP’s contributions to anti-corruption initiatives and expressed the need for enhanced training for investigators to strengthen Iraq’s oversight capabilities.

On Wednesday, the head of Iraq’s Federal Commission of Integrity (FCOI), Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, called for support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to address challenges in asset recovery and the extradition of fugitives. During a meeting with UNDP representative Yama Torabi, Al-Lami emphasized the necessity of collaboration in reclaiming misappropriated funds, underscoring the UNDP’s readiness to assist Iraq in these initiatives.

Al-Lami praised the UNDP for its efforts in promoting justice initiatives and enhancing commercial dispute resolution. He highlighted the fruitful partnership between his commission and the UNDP, particularly in drafting anti-corruption strategies and organizing awareness programs. He remarked, “The commission requires UNDP’s support in addressing key challenges related to asset recovery and extradition.”

In addition to seeking collaboration on asset recovery, Al-Lami articulated the need for expertise exchange in advanced anti-corruption practices, particularly regarding digital transformation and cybercrime. He noted that increasing the capabilities of Iraq’s oversight bodies through specialized training for investigators is critical for effective corruption investigations.

Al-Lami also mentioned ongoing coordination with various international organizations, including the UNDP, the European Union, and Transparency International, with a focus on combating corruption. He expressed optimism that these collaborative efforts would enhance Iraq’s capacity to recover assets misappropriated through corruption, ultimately benefiting developmental and reconstruction initiatives.
