General Electric Completes 30 Substations to Enhance Iraq’s Energy Infrastructure

GE has completed 30 substations in Iraq to enhance electricity transmission, adding 19 gigawatts to the grid and aiming to transition production units to combined cycle systems for improved efficiency and reduced emissions.

General Electric (GE) has announced the completion of 30 substations aimed at enhancing Iraq’s electricity transmission network. Alongside this initiative, GE revealed plans to shift production units from simple cycle to combined cycle technology to optimize performance.

Rashid Al-Janabi, the company’s director, reported significant advancements in the energy sector over the past decade, contributing an additional 19 gigawatts to the Iraqi power grid. He emphasized the vital collaboration with the Iraqi government, specifically the Ministry of Electricity, which has aided in the execution of pivotal projects to stabilize the electricity supply.

Under a long-term maintenance agreement signed in the previous year, GE is committed to regularly maintaining its electricity generation system, which has a capacity of 7 gigawatts, to ensure operational readiness for the approaching summer months. Al-Janabi noted the company’s dedication to enhancing power generation units with innovative GE Vernova technologies that will elevate operational efficiency and decrease carbon emissions by 30 percent.

Al-Janabi also highlighted the completion of six 132 kV transmission stations finished in a notably swift timeframe of six months ahead of schedule. This milestone illustrates the substantial progress made in electricity transmission initiatives within Iraq.
