Ethiopia’s Tigray War Has Ended, But the Road to Peace Remains Challenging
Ethiopia’s Tigray War ended in November 2022 with the Pretoria Agreement, but ongoing conflicts in the Amhara and Oromia regions threaten peace. The Tigray conflict resulted in significant humanitarian crises. Current territorial disputes complicate the pursuit of stability in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia boasts a rich history and has remained largely independent from European colonization. However, recent years have seen the nation entangled in conflicts, most notably a two-year war in the Tigray region from 2020 to 2022, which resulted in significant casualties, over two million displacements, and near-famine conditions in certain areas of the country.
Although the Tigray War concluded with a peace agreement in 2022, Ethiopia currently faces new conflicts, particularly between the Amhara and Oromo regions. This ongoing strife reflects deep-rooted political and ethnic grievances. Thus, while a ceasefire has been established in Tigray, the path to lasting peace in Ethiopia is still fraught with challenges as violence continues to affect civilians throughout the nation.
