APC Supports Tinubu’s Emergency Declaration in Rivers State
President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to political tension and security issues, including oil pipeline vandalism. APC National Secretary Ajibola Basiru endorsed this decision, emphasizing the need for restored peace. The governor and lawmakers have been suspended, with a new administrator appointed to manage state affairs while security forces are directed to protect vital infrastructure.
In response to escalating political tension and security issues in Rivers State, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency. This announcement was made during a nationwide broadcast on Tuesday. The declaration followed alarming reports of militant activities, including oil pipeline vandalism, coupled with a perceived lack of action from the state governor to mitigate these issues.
Ajibola Basiru, National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), expressed support for the emergency declaration. He highlighted that the situation in Rivers was deteriorating and called for an urgent restoration of peace and order. Basiru critiqued both the executive and legislative branches in the state for neglecting their responsibilities regarding citizen welfare and security.
Following the state of emergency declaration, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, along with his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and all elected lawmakers have been suspended for an initial period of six months. In their place, President Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas to administer the guidance of the state’s affairs during this critical period. Furthermore, the judiciary remains independent and will continue its operations as per constitutional mandates.
The President also ordered security agencies to intensify their efforts to protect lives, property, and essential infrastructure, particularly the crucial oil pipelines within the state. Basiru advised other governors, particularly in Osun, to heed the situation in Rivers and ensure local government councils are allowed to function to avert similar actions in their states.
President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State aims to address increasing political tension and security challenges, including oil pipeline vandalism. The support from APC’s National Secretary indicates a consensus on the need for stronger governance in the face of such crises. The suspension of the state’s elected officials and the appointment of an administrator demonstrate a decisive approach to restore order and protect citizens.
