AGF Defends Tinubu’s Suspension of Rivers Governor Fubara
Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi supports President Tinubu’s suspension of Governor Fubara, emphasizing the economic importance of oil production. He highlights the Supreme Court ruling against Fubara and asserts that the federal government’s actions are necessary for maintaining order and enforcing the rule of law in Rivers State.
Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has publicly supported President Bola Tinubu’s suspension of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Fagbemi argued that this action was essential to protect Nigeria’s economic interests, notably oil production, which is crucial for all citizens.
Fagbemi emphasized that disrupting pipelines is tantamount to becoming an enemy of Nigeria, stating, “In today’s Nigeria, for anyone to touch these pipelines, it’s not only the enemy of Rivers, it’s the enemy of Nigeria.” He criticized the ongoing crisis in Rivers, citing a need for decisive presidential action in light of the persistent instability.
The AGF remarked on the President’s firm stance against the deteriorating economic situation, highlighting that it could not be ignored any longer. He pointed out that the Supreme Court had previously found Governor Fubara guilty of constitutional violations, suggesting this warranted a serious governmental response.
Fagbemi referenced the Supreme Court ruling from February 28, 2025, which deemed Fubara’s governance as despotic, asserting that it justified the federal government’s intervention. He stressed that to ignore such serious allegations would be irresponsible.
Furthermore, the AGF addressed criticism regarding potential presidential overreach, affirming that Tinubu’s actions were within constitutional bounds and aimed at ensuring adherence to the court’s ruling. He maintained that the suspension was necessary to restore lawfulness in Rivers State amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding its legality.
The suspension of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara by President Bola Tinubu has been defended by Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi as a necessary measure for safeguarding Nigeria’s economic integrity. Citing the critical nature of oil production and a Supreme Court ruling on Fubara’s governance, Fagbemi reaffirmed the importance of adhering to judicial decisions and the need for order in governance to avoid perceived despotism in leadership.
